Sergey Lebedev

Craftsman, inventor of pinhole camera

Has an engineer’s degree, switched a couple of vocations, including teaching (in a children’s photography workshop). At some point, decided to go freelance: «Everything just fell into place all of a sudden, woodworking, photography». That is how the first pinhole-cameras came to be — from the fin, smoothed by the Baltic Sea and dried in the sun.

The idea was to preserve the authenticity of the sea using not only wood, but also shells, fragments of glass and ceramics found on the shore. The idea turned out to be extremely popular.

These cameras, inspired by the earliest photographic systems, have their own and unique characteristics. Essentially, it is the simplest device that allows you to snap a picture. Back to the basics.

Participated in several international exhibitions and has been covered both by printed and online publications. Sells his cameras on Etsy.com — a marketplace for handmade products and retro souvenirs.

«Shooting from low vantage points gives you the most immersion in the landscape. I think I took my game to a new level by constructing my cameras using the very elements of that landscape.»
