Maria Bulatova

Director, Art Director, Actress of Vspyshka Theater

Maria is a true explorer of modern theater. She got her first degree in acting at the Academy of Music and Theatre. Then the second — in directing at the Konstantin Raikin Theater School. For Maria, Vspyshka is a research project of modern drama. You won’t see traditional plays, a permanent troupe, platforms or even a specific setlist there. For its plays, the theater makes use of unlikely spaces: the city, bars, the forest, abandoned places, basements. Maria expresses her ideas in various forms, whether it’s a promenade performance, a performance quest, or an audio theater. The provocative one-man performance Sluchai V Lesu (Incident in the Forest) is an explicit drama about the life of Kostya from Barnaul. It exposes the deep traumas of modern Russian society. The performance was included in the long list of the Golden Mask theater festival. In 2021, the theater launched its AvanPost Art Residence to attract new people to the theater.
